Businesses can lead local response to climate change

The Hamilton Spectator published an opinion piece by our Executive Director, Priyanka Lloyd, on the opportunity for businesses to lead on climate action.

Hardly a day goes by when climate change is not in the headlines. At a time when many have been watching the NHL playoffs, Sports Illustrated recently ran a story about how climate change is putting outdoor hockey and winter sports in peril. Burlington recently joined the growing number of municipalities in Canada in declaring a climate emergency. Currently, Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick are experiencing severe flooding, with thousands of residents trying to save their home for the second time in three years.

Last October, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) put out a report with a clear message: we’re facing a climate catastrophe if we don’t act quickly.

We are on track to see more extreme weather events, water shortages, pollution-related illness, and species extinction. We have 11 years to reduce global emissions by 45 per cent to avoid the very worst effects on life as we know it. Most recently, we learned that Canada is warming at twice the rate of the global average.

Quite a lot it turns out, and many in Hamilton and Burlington are already leading the way.

Sustainable Hamilton Burlington (SHB), in particular, has been the driving force behind a great deal of business sustainability action and leadership in the region.
